The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric river dam that spans the Yangtze River in Yichang city of China's Hubei province. It is the world's largest electricity-generating plant of any kind. The dam body was completed in 2006. Currently, it contains 26 completed generators in the shore power plant, each with a capacity of 700 MW. Six additional generators in the underground power plant are being installed and are not expected to become fully operational until around 2011. The total electric generating capacity of the dam will eventually reach 22,500 MW.

| China, Russia Agree On Gas Supply Pricing Formula |
China reached an initial agreement with Russia on the pricing formula for the supply of natural gas to the world’s second-biggest energy-consuming country, reported Thursday’s Bloomberg.Pricing was the “most difficult part” of the negotiations, Zhang Guobao, the head of China’s National Energy Administration, told reporters after a meeting of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body to the country’s legislature. Prices of Russian gas sold to China will be linked to oil prices under a formula, Zhang said, without elaborating. China agreed in February last year to provide Russia with $25 billion of loans in return for 20 years of crude oil supplies. Talks on “other commercial terms” of the gas supply deal are still ongoing, Zhang said, without giving details. China is currently importing about 10 million cubic meters of natural gas a day from Central Asia through a pipeline, Zhang said. Deliveries began at the end of last year, he said. |
