| China Auto Sales Up Nearly 47 Percent Y/Y In May |

Sales of China's passenger cars in May reached 829,100 units, equivalent to an almost 47 percent increase in growth compared to last year, boosted by tax cuts and other government incentives, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
From January to May, passenger car sales rose by 21 percent to reach 3.36 million units, while total vehicle sales climbed 14.3 percent to 4.96 million units, more than the 4.84 million units produced in the same period. Industry groups forecast that China's auto sales will top 11 million units in 2009,over the earlier forecast of about 10 million. However, while China's passenger car sales in May was at 46.8 percent compared to last year, the quantity of units sold in May was slightly below the 831,000 units reported in April. Majority of the units sold, or 591,300 units were sedans, especially small cars. But sales of crossover vehicles also soared, by 84 percent year-on-year, to 172,600 units. Sales of SUVs climbed 25.8 percent, to 47,700 units, the industry group said. From January, more cars were sold in China than in the US, making the country the world's largest car market, helped by Beijing's incentives to boost domestic consumption. But in May, 925,824 units were sold in the US, outpacing China for the first time this year. U.S. sales of cars and light trucks rose 13 percent in May compared with April, to 925,824 units, though they fell nearly 34 percent from a year earlier, according to Autodata Corp. |
