| How To Obtain A China ICP Licence? |
Nowadays it’s common practice for foreign websites to be hosted in China to get better contact and loading speed with their Chinese audience. In doing so, you are reminded that it is illegal to host a website in China without an Internet Content Provider (ICP) licence, or else you will be blocked by the Great Firewall of China (GFW).If you host your website in China, whether it’s a company website or a personal blog, whether you are a foreigner or Chinese, you have to register with the China authorities to get an ICP licence. ICP license is issued by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to permit China-based websites to operate in that country. China government promulgated in September 2000 the Telecommunications Regulations of the People’s Republic of China in which this requirement was instated. According to that regulation, China-based Internet service providers are required to block the site if a license is not acquired within a grace period. It doesn’t matter whether the language used in the website is Chinese or English, or whether your domain name is a .com, .net, .org, .cn, .com.cn, or .hk, or if you bought your domain name in China, Europe or elsewhere. What matters is the physical location of your website, if it is in China then the ICP license would be a must. You can register at http://www.miibeian.gov.cn/ to get an ICP licence. That website is the only place for ICP License application. It is all in Chinese, so you may need a Chinese friend to help you fill the forms. The registration is for free. For the registration, you or your company has to have an address and phone/mobile numbers in China in order to apply for the License. If you do not have a contact address or phone number in China, you could find a Chinese friend to help you with it, but in that case, the ICP license is registered under your friend’s name. |
