| Free Cervical Cancer Screening For Low-Income Chinese Women |
|
Qiagen, in cooperation with the China Cancer Foundation (CCF), offered free screening of human papillomavirus (HPV), a root cause of cervical cancer, for low-income women at 31 Chinese hospitals across China on March 8, the International Women's Day.
The free testing program is part of the larger "3.8 Program", a nationwide prevention campaign organized by the Cancer Foundation of China and partially sponsored by Qiagen. HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer. According to the Cancer Foundation of China, 17 of the participating hospitals in its 2008 cervical cancer screening activity reported their result, and out of 1,617 women tested, 30 were found to have mild dysplasia due to HPV infection, five had moderate dysplasia, four had severe dysplasia, and five were found to have invasive cervical cancer. All women found to have CIN2/3 and cancer were referred to local medical centers for further diagnosis and surgery if appropriate. "Our goal at the Cancer Foundation of China is to improve awareness of cervical cancer and HPV screening in China to save lives," said Professor Qiao Youlin, general director of the event and chief of the Department of Cancer Epidemiology at the Cancer Institute, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. "Like Qiagen, we believe that the best in preventative care, including HPV testing, should be available to all women. Last year we were able to help hundreds of women reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer." More than 3000 low-income women benefited from the program, which is part of CCF's national campaign against cancer. "We firmly believe that cervical cancer will become a past tragedy by increasing people's awareness of the disease and promoting the screening of HPV," said Dr. Shi Chenyang, president of Qiagen Asia. "This means that we must take preventive measures to all women of the right age, including conducting HPV testing for them. We are honored to cooperate with CCF to turn this goal into reality on the International Women's Day. About 500,000 new cervical cancer patients in the world are diagnosed each year and over half of them die from the disease. Qiagen is a leading provider of sample and assay technologies and has more than 2600 employees in over 30 regions across the world. Sample technologies are used to isolate DNA, RNA and proteins from any biological sample. Assay technologies are then used to make specific target biomolecules, such as the DNA of a specific virus, visible for subsequent analysis. CCF is a national non-profit organization founded in October 1984, that is engaged in promoting China's cancer research, prevention and treatment. |
