"Cape No. 7," is a modern-day romance between a Taiwanese singer and a Japanese publicist, features some Japanese actors and dialogue. The movie grossed 530 million dollars (15 million US) in Taiwan last year, making it the island's highest-grossing Chinese-language film of all time. The people on the mainland considers themselves the biggest victim of Japanese wartime aggression in the 1930s and 1940s and anti-Japanese sentiments still prevail. The Taiwanese take a far more favourable view of Japan despite being colonised by it between 1895-1945. Taiwan has diplomatic ties with Japan since Tokyo formally recognises Beijing. Another cultural exchange is under negotiations. A delegation from Taipei's National Palace Museum will for the first time visit the Palace Museum in Beijing's Forbidden City. The historic visit is expected to culminate in Beijing lending Taipei several artifacts from the Qing Dynasty to complement an exhibition scheduled for the autumn. Another development towards improving relations between Taiwan and the mainland is in direct flights. The government of Taiwan has decided to implement regular flight service from Taiwan to China by the first half of 2009. According to media, the countries have not discussed the matter yet, but all the preparations have been completed |
